drawings
2007–2011
It started when I was bored; stuck in the space you occupy when staying at someone else’s house after a late night and a train ticket booked for later that evening. After the paper has been read from cover to cover the sitting around continues and a biro provides some amusement.
By now I have spent hours moving my hand over a piece of paper making minute marks, pointless decisions, getting cold, making dots and dashes, unnecessary crinkles, particles and sheen. Pen, pencil, gel pen, ink and silk-screen printing are used to build layers of colour on top of photos printed in newspapers and magazines.
I systematically collect particular publications, flick through magazines when visiting friends and family and grab leftovers when travelling on the train. It isn’t enough and I’m looking for collaborations with individuals and libraries across the world.
Drawings have recently been shown in, ‘Memory of a Hope’, Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool and ‘The Jerwood Drawing Prize 2010’, London and touring.
The project has been supported by the Oppenhein-John Downes Memorial Fund.
